Travel Tags Tutorial

Drea here with a fun project using the new travel stamps sold at Red Rubber Designs! As soon as I saw them I was inspired to make these tags using some mixed media and kraft cardstock.

Use an old credit card to apply gesso to some kraft tags. Mine were cut with my Cricut Expression using the Plantin SchoolBook cartridge.

Once the gesso is dry spray with some mists, in whatever colors you'd like, letting the mists pool into eachother.

Using a permanent ink, stamp your image onto the tags once they're dry. I had a couple that were still a little damp, so the image bled a little, but with these tags it still looks great! On the first two, I used the Paris Collage and the Triomphe Collage stamps.

The other tags were stamped with the Tower of Pisa and the Pyramid Collage stamps. The Tower of Pisa image is the one that bled the most, but with the gesso and sprays, looks intentional and more distressed, which is why I left it.

Speaking of distressing, do that to the edges of your tags, and finish the edges with some stitching. I used a zigzag stitch on my sewing machine with some variegated metallic threads, picking up the colors in the tags. Then I just added some grommets to the holes, and tied them together with some fibers. I also added some little travel charms to the tops, like the plane seen here. .

And the little passport that I added here. Thanks for looking and have a great day!

  3. Hi Drea, I just wanted to say that I have just found this website and I love your travel tags, they are beautiful. Why have you used gesso on your cardstock? What does it do to the cardstock?

  5. Thanks for the sweet comments everyone! Susan the gesso is just for texture, but it also makes the tags stronger, creating a base for the sprays. It's just a fun technique! I hope you try it someday, and glad you found us! :)
